Choosing a violin can be quite a process, especially when considering a full purchase. Most young students, when beginning, will rent due to their constant growing and needing of a bigger size. Purchasing a violin usually only happens when a musician is in need of a full size, which will likely be the last they use.
Violin sizes are measured using fractions, with violins being as small as 1/32 to the full size of 4/4. Most young children ages 5-6 need a 1/8 size, most youth are around 1/4 size to 3/4 size. Your local music shop can help size and advise you with the best fit.
When attempting to find a place to go, it is advised by most classically trained teachers to find a string shop, not just a music shop. While any available music shop can get the job done, string shops often offer a greater selection, more resources, and more services. Depending on each shop, purchasing and renting from string shops can have benefits, such as renting bundles for families or free repairs with a purchase. You can find string and music shops in just about any large city!
With that said, serving in Utah county, here are some nearby music shops (with links!) and string shops that are available. Just a disclosure, I have not used all of these, so experiences may vary!
- Micelli Violins: A string shop located Highland, Utah. A family owned, small business. Any inquiries will need an appointment available to book on their website!
- Summerhays Music: A music shop located in Orem, Utah. They offer a huge variety of services and instruments, including string repairs. However, I believe they have limited rental options.
- Bert Murdock Music: A music and rental shop in Orem, Utah. They seem to cater more towards school districts in bulk, which usually means lower quality instruments, but it would be worth an investigation!
- Charles W. Liu Fine Violins: A small string shop located in Midvale. This shop does not have rentals and would only be a recommendation for those seeking to purchase! However, they have a huge selection of sizes and styles.
